Mental Health Supports
Our people face significant, ongoing challenges with feeling mentally well that are rooted in traumas experienced during the (re)settlement era, the resulting intergenerational effects, and other causes.
It is of critical importance that we support our community members who want and need access to timely mental health and addictions services.
How to make referrals to mental health supports
As health care practitioners, there are 3 avenues for referring patients to mental health and addictions services.
1
Check with the Supervisor of Community Health Programs (SCHP, formerly known as Nurse in Charge or NIC), to determine if your community has a mental health nurse. The patient should be referred to the local mental health nurse, if possible.
2
Contact the Central Intake Worker. This position is located in Iqaluit, however, they provide assistance to all regions of Nunavut for mental health referrals.
- The phone number is 867-975-7267.
- You can also look up the individual’s email address by searching the Government of Nunavut Staff Directory (http://www.directory.gov.nu.ca/Search.aspx), select ‘title’ and then search for Central Intake Worker.
3
Similarly, if those 2 options do not work, you can contact the Director of Mental Health.
- The phone number is 867-975-5290.
- Even if the individual in this position is out of town, there is always coverage, so someone can always be reached. Similarly, you can search for the individual in the Government of Nunavut Staff Directory.
