IsumaTV is a collaborative multimedia platform for indigenous filmmakers and media organizations. Each user can design their own space, or channel, to reflect their own identity, mandate and audience.
Indigenous media organizations can operate their own state-of-the-art media site, under their own design and URL, and at the same time share IsumaTV’s sophisticated back end infrastructure, without needing to re-invent the digital wheel.
A co-production of Igloolik Isuma Productions and Kunuk Cohn Productions, Before Tomorrow is the first feature film written and directed by Igloolik’s Arnait Video Productions women’s collective, which has been filming Inuit women’s stories since 1991 based on cultural authenticity and community involvement.
In her award-winning documentary, director Alethea Arnaquq-Baril joins a new tech-savvy generation of Inuit as they campaign to challenge long-established perceptions of seal hunting. Armed with social media and their own sense of humour and justice, this group is bringing its own voice into the conversation and presenting themselves to the world as a modern people in dire need of a sustainable economy.
In the mid-1950s, lured by false promises of a better life, Inuit families were displaced by the Canadian government and left to their own devices in the Far North. In this icy desert realm, Martha Flaherty and her family lived through one of Canadian history’s most sombre and little-known episodes.
(Ce qu’il faut pour vivre) Based on an actual tuberculosis epidemic that swept the Far North of Canada in mid-century, “The Necessities of Life” is set in 1955, when Tivii, an Inuit hunter (Natar Ungalaaq, “The Fast Runner”) is diagnosed and taken from his village on remote Baffin Island for treatment at a hospital in Quebec City. Director Benoit Pilon, documentary-trained, tells the story gently, amusingly, capturing loneliness well, but also the culture clash with paternalistic but essentially clueless doctors and bureaucrats.

Transliteration consists in representing the characters of a given script by the characters of another, while keeping the operation reversible. The use of diacritics or digraphs solves the problem of different number of characters between the alphabets of the two writing systems.
